To check how your creations look in The Witcher 3 - or just to play an already existing level and get inspired - you can start the game straight from the editor.

There are two main scenarios for launching the game from the editor and in both versions, different ways in which this can be done. All the actions described below are done via the marked section of the top menu bar.

Spawn Geralt on the level

So you loaded a world and started doing some edits. Would be great to just spawn Geralt on the level and walk around to see how things work now, right? For that, use the first two red gamepad icons:

The first one will spawn Geralt on level, in 0,0,0 point position, and load layers based on streaming data.

The second one will start the game without streaming, with layers you have loaded at the moment, and spawn Geralt in the exact spot where your camera is when you press the button.

The third one (🎮 💾) is used to load saved games, but as this works a bit different, it is explained in a separate section below.

Warning

Don’t start the game from the Editor via the “Fast” option while the camera is at high altitude - Geralt will be spawned at the camera’s exact location (somewhere high in the sky) and fall to his death.

Start game from game definition

To start the game from a chosen point, a chosen quest etc. of The Witcher 3 you need to use a game definition file.

In the dropdown menu you can always find the deafult witcher3.redgame game definition file - this is the actual main game which starts from the very beginning. But where to find other game definition files for different moments in the game?

First, you need to start the Asset Browser (CTRL+A or view tab) which allows you to browse all game files. The fastest way to see all .redgame files is to use the search bar on the top-right which should enlist all game definition files.

Now, after you select one of the game definition files in the Asset Browser (example from the screen: q305_ambush_only), go back to the Editor window and press the green arrow icon (“Use selected game definition”).

This will load the game definition file to the drop-down menu and select it as the current game definition.

Everything is set. You can now press the 🕹️ icon (“Play game from definition”) and the game will start - in this instance - during the chosen quest.

Please note: starting the game from game definition files will also load the required world.

As you can see on the screenshots, the world which was loaded in the Editor before starting the game was Skellige. However, after you start the game from game definition, it will automatically load the world which is assigned to that part of the game. In this instance, Geralt is spawned in Novigrad and this is also the world which will load in the Editor.


Loading save games

It is also possible to load in a save file and start the game from there. There are two important things to remember about that:

After loading a save game all unsaved progress of your edited world will be lost. This method will not load the saves into your world, but load the world that the save context has, not the world you have currently opened.

Make sure to keep your saves in the Your PC > Documents > Witcher 3 > gamesaves directory.
