Starting the Editor
Here’s what steps you need to follow during the setup process.
The Witcher 3 REDkit is an independent, downloadable program and a separate product available on all PC storefronts. Once you get the Editor, a quick setup is required before the first launch.
Download and launch the Editor
You can download REDkit here:
Once your download is complete, launch the Editor via the storefront you are using.
If for some reason the Editor won’t start after installation, you can also start the Editor manually (not recommended): navigate to the editor install location and open bin\x64_RedKit\editor.exe
.
First time setup
In order to start using the Editor, you will need to generate (“uncook”) certain files from a The Witcher 3 game which should be already installed on your PC. That’s why before launching the editor you need to specify the location for the game and :
a valid game path (e.g.
C:\Games\GOG\The Witcher 3\
)a valid depot path (e.g.
C:\REDkit\depot\
)
A depot is the the place where all the “uncooked” game files - which you will be able to start working with - are kept. In video games, large numbers of files are usually merged (compressed) into a smaller number of bigger files so the user doesn’t see every single file that makes up the game. You can think about uncooking is basically “unpacking”.
Press Generate and wait for the progress bar to fill.
Once the progress bar is full and green, you should see the Status change to Depot is valid.
You can now press Continue and move on to setting up your first project.
Create a new project
Here you can enter your new project’s (or mod’s) name and specify a location for it’s files to be stored e.g.: C:\REDkit\projects\my_first_mod.
Once you have filled in all the details, press the button.
Projects have specific sub-folders that are needed during the creation of a mod:
/workspace
- the folder all the game assets you are working on are stored (e.g. meshes, levels, layers, textures)/publish
- the folder where the final mod is placed (ready for upload to Steam or Nexus Mods)
Plus other more intermediary and temporary folders.
Recent projects
After the first time setup, the next time you start the Editor, you can access your Recent Projects directly from the welcome dialog window or use the Browse option to find other projects to load.
