Load an existing world

Before creating your first world, try loading one of the existing ones to learn more about the Editor.

Creating your own world from the ground up might sound exciting, but it’s definitely easier to learn the Editor and experiment on one of the Worlds already available in the game.


1. Choose a level

In the Editor, go to File in the top-left corner and choose Open World. The Asset Browser (think of it as the main in-Editor file explorer) will open in a new window. You should now see the virtaldepot > levels sections and folders for different in-game worlds like Kaer Morhen or Novigrad.

1.1 Find a World file

In the world-folder of your choice, locate the World file (.w2w extension). For example, in the kaer_morhen folder, the file you are looking can be seen on the image below.

If there are many different files in a folder, you can filter them by Class. In the top right corner of the Asset Browser. To filter only World files, choose CWorld.

The larger the level, the more time it can take to load. You may want to start small before moving on to the likes of Novigrad!


2. It feels a bit empty here

After the World is done loading it might feel a bit… empty. You’re right. That’s because the Editor won’t load everything automatically. You will just see the landscape and vegetation (just as on the Skellige screen below).


3. Load everything on the level

Think of the world as an image you are working on in Photoshop - it’s built with layers upon layers. If you don’t ask the Editor to load them, by default, they won’t be visible. How can you change that?

Go to the Scene Explorer on the right side of the screen, choose the top folder, [level name]. Right-click on it and choose Load all in group. Now everything that is part of the level will be loaded in.

All available layers and objects should be visible now! Has the level changed? Did you notice any differences with the previous Skellige screen?
